For a “dream team” tour I guess I would have to approach it from two angles. If we’re keeping it plausible, then I could only go with currently active bands. On the flipside, we could also pretend we had a time machine to assemble some of the greats of the past who have either died or broken up their bands, which is pretty much what I would be doing if anyone was ever foolish enough to give me access to a time machine.
1. Plausible tour of active bands
Co-headliners: Neurosis & Swans
Support: Thou & The Body collab set, Chelsea Wolfe
As amazing as that record is, it’s a shame that Swans was basically defunct at the time of Neurosis’ 2003 collaboration with Jarboe, as it would have been amazing to see a full-on collaboration between Neurosis and Swans. While Jarboe no longer performs with the resurrected Swans, being able to witness back-to-back sets from two of music’s most visceral, genuine acts would be incredible. Who knows- maybe they would subsequently collaborate on a record, which would fulfill a huge music nerd fantasy of mine.
While on the subject of outstanding collaborations, it would be really cool to see Thou & The Body open a show like this with material from the two collaborative albums they’ve released in the last year. Their bulldozer heaviness could then be tempered by a somber set from Chelsea Wolfe, who could bridge the gap of the sonic extremes that Neurosis and Swans traffic in.
2. Bullshit Time Machine Tour
Vol.4- era Black Sabbath
Hendrix from 1969
Trout Mask Replica era Captain Beefheart
Keith Morris era Black Flag
Fun House era Stooges
Ok, so if we could actually assemble all of these bands from these specific times on one tour package using a time machine, logic follows that we could then also send this tour package back to 1956 when Elvis was beginning to make waves and rock & roll was in its infancy. Imagine what today’s musical landscape would look like if we coerced a bunch of soda shops in the ’50s to spike their rootbeer floats with acid, and then unleashed all of that music on them. People would have lost their minds. Who knows what sort of weird shit we’d be seeing today if heavy metal, punk & whatever the fuck you want to call Beefheart had a 10-20 year head start.
