The Ting Tings: We have all been big fans of theirs since the get-go. They came out swinging with an album that was very fresh, yet completely catchy. They’re just so unexpected. Then, with Sounds of Nowheresville, they put a dance spin on things, and then Super Critical had this throwback quality. It’s impossible to not respect how they broke the rules and took chances with each album but always stayed true to who they are. Sophisticated and nonchalant rebels. It makes you want to flip the bird at the chaperones, grab your date, and ditch prom.
Public Enemy: Complete disregard for convention. Even though we don’t always agree with the message, we definitely agree with the shock factor, and resorting to whatever measures to have their message heard. The way they create their samples is just so unique and inventive; it’s art in every sense. And, of course, there’s Flavor Flav, who is the epitome of a showman. There’s such a heavy message in their songs, but just as you’re about to get in your head about the music, a guy with a clock around his neck reminds you that it’s all just a party. We love that they remind us music should be both fun and meaningful. Plus, they would make the after partying a lot more interesting.
The Clash: Legends. If they were a new band today, they would still be as important as they were in their time. Their mastery of balancing “fun” and “dark” really influenced us. It’s also the perfect music to crank at full volume when you want to make your parents mad.
