1) Eat healthy. Being out on the road makes it really easy to hit the fast food joints and gas stations for quick gratification. Pack a cooler with snacks and lunch meal items and replenish these at grocery stores at whatever town you’re in. Not only will you save money doing this, but you’ll find yourself with more energy for playing shows and feeling better.
2) Lose the attitude. You might think you have the best band and the newest sound, but to any venue you arrive at, you are nothing but a day’s work for people that listen and put up with bands on a daily basis. Make friends, not enemies and you’ll be surprised how far it will enhance your experience with your show.
3) Learn the Sound guy’s name. Actually learn everyone’s name at the venue from the moment you are approached or approach anyone, but especially this guy or gal. Think about how many nights a week this person works late and deals with people that act like they’re just there to do your bidding. Call him by name from the stage, don’t play over his instructions during soundcheck and be patient by the process he has set up for his stage. Focus on the things you absolutely can’t live with, but don’t think it has to be perfect. No matter what the soundcheck, by the time you get on stage, it’s going to sound different. Learn to adapt and make the most out of each room you encounter.
4) After soundcheck, or before the gig, go to some local places, give away a couple of CDs and offer to put 1-3 people on the guest list. Chances are you don’t have friends if it’s a new town you’re playing in, and most times, these people will show up if you’re kind to them. They might actually bring a friend or two, increasing your draw, giving you the chance to expand your fanbase the next time around.
5) Be on time. Respect your brothers and sisters in the Van or Tour Bus and most importantly, strive to have fun and play your best every night. They call it playing music for a reason.
