1. It’s expensive. Be smart about everything you do. Watch what you spend your money on. Before you know it, everything you saved is draining very quickly.
2. Hygiene. When you aren’t rolling in the dough, you don’t always have a shower. Buy yourself some baby wipes. Sitting for hours with a dirty under region is not fun. You’re also in confined spaces with people 90% of the time. Be courteous to your neighbor.
3. Eat well and hydrate. Yeah, beer is good. Beer is fun. So are shots. And who doesn’t want to eat Taco Bell everyday? Because I know I do. But water is super key. And eating right so you have energy for your shows is very important. Make sure you throw in some protein bars and greens in your diet. This also prevents muddbutt. You don’t want muddbutt.
4. Make an effort to support every artist on the bill, from the local support acts to the headliner. We’re all people, and we’re all trying to do the same thing. Be polite and show your appreciation. It’s also true what they say, you never know when that small local band is the next big thing or if that national touring act needs another opener down the road. We as musicians need to stick together and create a strong community that looks out for one another.
5. Be nice to everyone that works at the venue. This is so important. Don’t be a dick or a diva. Just because it’s their job, doesn’t mean you can just boss them around. Ask how you can help, talk to them. They’re people too. Show them that you appreciate the opportunity to perform in their venue and thank them for their services and their help in putting on a sick show.
