Travel Day
Monday, Aug. 3: Rolled outta Portland for San Francisco today at 2 p.m.. Thirteen hours later, we finally got into Berkeley to crash for the night. Jammed all day at the house, and now we’re getting ready for the kick-off show at Hotel Utah with Sticky Valentines and Dog Party!
Hotel Utah
Tuesday, Aug. 4: We spent the day hanging and skatin’ around Berkley before our SF show tonight. Hotel Utah was a really cool bar with a western vibe, cool room with a little balcony area for extra seating. Sticky Valentines opened the night and killed it, full of style AND substance, great rock ‘n’ roll. Dog Party’s set ruled too, and then we had some fun working with our new tour set list, tried out an old favorite cover of ours and had good time partying with all the homies! Now just waiting for everyone to get up so we can head off to Santa Cruz to play the Catalyst Room.
The Catalyst Atrium Room
Wednesday, Aug. 5: Woke up after a long night in SF and spent the day skating around Berkley, checking out record and thrift stores. Played with some cool bands in Santa Cruz, Black Tigers killed it with a cover of The Romones’ “Pet Sematary” and were fun as hell to kick it with after. The Catalyst room sent us off with a few extra big-ass pizzas and beer for the road to Fresno tomorrow night.
Peeve’s Public House
Thursday, Aug. 6: We hit the road early after taking full advantage of the hotel’s continental breakfast. Arrived in Fresno and swung by the county jail to check the spot where Ray’s favorite rapper, Mac Dre, recorded “Back N Da Hood,” the first rap record ever recorded in jail. The show was packed and hot as fuck, but the bar kept us hydrated with plenty of sangria. We left at midnight and drove four hours to L.A. I slept in the van to keep guard on the gear while the rest of the guys set up camp in our buddies’ apartment for the night. Can’t wait to play the Viper Room tonight. We heard Gary Busey is supposed to be there tonight, fingers crossed, haha.
The Viper Room
Friday, Aug. 7: Woke up to move the van out of a tow zone and parked in front of this lady’s house who works with Brian May of Queen making these replicas of 3D pictures and glasses from the 1800s. One set was about space and the other was weird demon pictures. We talked for a while and she gave us a box of cards and glasses to take with us. We spent the rest of the day drinking screwdrivers by the hotel pool and got some Oki dogs before the show. The show was great. The stage sound was awesome and felt really good up there. The bass was that perfect level where I could just feel every note through my body. Love it when that happens. The Crazy Squeeze crushed it, high-energy rock ‘n’ roll with super catchy songs. I met these guys back in 2012 when I was touring with Lustkillers, and we shared the stage at a Hollywood strip club called Cheetahs. Lead singer Johnny played guitar for The Stitches, one of my favorite bands growing up. If you haven’t heard either of these bands, definitely check them out. Got tomorrow off, so we’re heading to Victor’s family’s house in Riverside, a few hours away, for a cookout. Can’t wait to get down on that good-ass Mexican food.
Day off
Saturday, Aug. 9: Got the hell out of L.A. early to try and beat traffic and went down to Riverside for a killer cookout at Victor’s aunt’s house. We got to swim, drink beer, and eat Mexican food all day. As a thank you, we performed a stripped-down poolside set and had sing-alongs all night. Couldn’t thank them enough for all the hospitality they showed us.
