It’s hard to get any rituals going when you’re on tour. Even eating time isn’t something you can work into something each gig time. But we always sound check the same song, because we know it has the elements which we know instinctively should sound a certain way we use it as a barometer of the venue’s acoustics. Is it a dull room is it full of echoes, and we can adjust accordingly to the qualities. Sometimes you can do nothing and just have to put your faith in the sound man. On big gigs, we have a rugby huddle and Paul gives us a motivation chant and speech which can focus the mind. As I am the singer, I stay away from smoke machines, smoke rooms. Also, try not to eat too much heavy food. We toured Spain for a month and most of the venues organize food. So we would eat most of the day do a soundcheck, and then go gorge, which we were really ready for. But it’s the worse thing to do just before going on stage, if we were lions on the Serengeti, at that point we’d lay down under a tree and sleep it off not move to the most energy-intensive part of the whole.
