I am the drummer, so it’s important for me to try and warm up a bit before the show.
First, I grab a drink from the bar. Usually a light beer, but I’ve recently been enjoying a glass of red wine before heading to stage to play. I really suck at playing my drums if I’m drunk, so I am very careful not to have one too many! Booze is not an absolute must for me, but one drink can warm up and loosen the body a little. Drink responsibly 21+ kids!
After a few sips I start to stretch. I try to get in about 5 minutes of classic stretching. Then Ill grab my drumsticks and do a few arms over the head/behind the back stretches and wrist warm-ups. This is about the time I catch my band members looking my way giggling and pointing/imitating like 3rd graders. It’s cool, that must just be part of their pre-show ritual haha.
Once my limbs are feeling warmed up, I usually grab my drum pad and head over to sit next to the rest of the band. I enjoy sharing a few words with my comrades while practicing some speed drills and paradiddles. Most of the time I try to match the bpm of whatever music is playing around me, whether it be a stereo or the live band performing before us.
Last but not least, I always check the tuning of my drums and finish my drink before our set time starts, and grab another drink to walk out on stage with! Thanks! Kyle
