Our favorite story from this tour comes from Tennessee during a day off at Rock Island State Park. We were meeting some friends who lived nearby, so we arrive early and park in the back by the beach area. The whole band jumps in the water- which is colder than us Gulf of Mexico kids are used to- and are thoroughly enjoying a low-key day of brats, burgers, beers and beaches. Most of us had never been to Tennessee and were taken by surprise at the state’s natural beauty, which made the second half of our day even more surreal. Our friends finally arrive and tell us we need to party like the locals- by ditching the beach and going to the waterfalls. There was only one problem: you have to swim across the river and hike a mile and a half up the mountain to get there, and we’re a bunch of Florida boys who only brought flip-flops. Undeterred, we bravely ventured barefoot up the mountainside and reached the falls to find dozens of people already in full party mode in the most secluded area of the park. We joined our newfound friends in their festivities, and even took part in a local tradition: jumping off a forty-foot waterfall straight into the river! This was brand new for us so we had to psych ourselves up before hurtling our bodies off the side of a cliff, even knowing that plenty of people had done it before us and it was perfectly safe. But once you hit the water at the bottom, there’s nothing you want more than to climb back up and feel that rush again. We eventually made our way back to the bus and drove out to Nashville, but I’m already looking forward to the next time we get to go out to Rock Island State Park on the road. Now we know a few local tricks and can bring real shoes!
